FAQs

What is Nazarene Youth Conference 2011—A World Unbroken?

NYC (Nazarene Youth Conference) is an exciting and life-changing event for high school students and it only happens once every four years!  The experience is jam packed with dynamic speakers, worship with thousands of other high school students and sponsors from the USA and Canada, informative breakout sessions with leaders in the church, service projects in the community, high energy concerts from some leading artists in Christian music, and so much more.

At this conference we will explore how to experience the transformational power of God, understand the brokenness in the world, discover effective ways to respond to this brokenness, and engage in the work of God to bring hope and healing.  Come join us as we envision A World Unbroken!

When and where is NYC?

The event will take place in Louisville, Kentucky at the International Convention Center (KICC) and Downtown Arena.  The actual conference dates are July 5-10, 2011.  However, the district you travel with may have additional activities planned for your specific group before or after the conference.

Who can attend NYC 2011—A World Unbroken?

• Any student who is going into or graduating from high school in 2011 (yes, incoming freshman can come too) and of course all those in between.

• Adults who are approved by their district as a sponsor and have undergone a background check.  There is a required sponsor to student ratio of 1:8. It is recommended that every church sending students to NYC would send at least one sponsor from that church to attend NYC as well.

• Adults who are interested in volunteering for the event.  There is a minimum age requirement of 21 and all volunteers must undergo a background check, provide a pastoral reference, and be approved by the NYC office.  Volunteers are such an important part of making NYC happen!

Why should I go?

• Students: This event will be one of the highlights of your life and one you will remember for years to come!  How many chances do we have as high school students to meet teenagers from all over the United States and Canada and worship with thousands of people just like us?  The relationships you establish at NYC will be life changing and the impact of God’s presence and touch transformational.

• Adult District Sponsors: How many times as adults do we wonder what it would be like to be a part of something that matters and makes a difference?  Here is your chance – to put the faith that you have in our teenagers into action, to invest individually in their lives right where they are, and to witness first-hand what God can do when the youth of our world fully surrender to Him.

• Adult Event Volunteers: Just in case the idea of a free one-of-a-kind t-shirt doesn’t light a fire inside of you, how about a chance to be a part of THE team that makes happen the 2nd largest event sponsored by the Church of the Nazarene?  You will not only have the opportunity to use your gifts and interests to make NYC a reality; you will also be investing in the lives of thousands of teenagers as they explore what it takes to create A World Unbroken.

How much does it cost?

Students and Adult District Sponsors:
The NYC program fee for students and adult district sponsors depends on how quickly you register with your district.  Check with your District NYC Coordinator for exact dates to get the following pricing:

    FEE             CATEGORY

$450 USD    Early Bird Program Fee
    $500 USD    Regular Program Fee
    $525 USD    Late Program Fee

There will be an additional cost for travel, lodging, and other meals (not covered by the program fee). Your district will have all the cost specifics and will communicate this information with all participants.

Important note:  Additional costs of $100.00 USD over and above the program fee per student and adult registrant are mandated should your district NYI leadership make the choice to lodge outside of the NYC hotel block.  Why?  Because the total cost of NYC is directly tied to our use of hotels within the NYC hotel block.  Districts going outside the hotel block damage the financial health of the event plus undermine our credibility in the host city.  So make sure to save yourself money and stick with your district’s assigned hotel.

Adult Event Volunteers:

In order to volunteer for NYC, you must be willing and able to assist with your own expenses (lodging, transportation, etc.)  If this is an issue, please communicate with the NYC office at events@nazarene.org.

How do I register?

• Students:  Your district will provide the process for NYC registration.  All the forms you need will be available through your district.

• Adult District Sponsors:  All necessary registration procedures and forms will be available through each district.  District sponsors must be approved by their district leadership and undergo a background check.  Once approval has been given, sponsors will receive a web address from their district NYI leadership to register online.

• Adult Event Volunteers:  All necessary registration procedures and forms will be available through the NYC website.  Event volunteers must complete all forms, including a pastoral reference, undergo a background check and be approved by the NYC office.  Once approval has been given, event volunteers will receive a web address from the NYC office to register online.

What if my family is from the USA/Canada but is currently living in another world area?

“Missionary Kids” (MK’s) and those youth living outside the USA/Canada have two choices in registering for NYC 2011:
• Travel and stay with their home district in the USA/Canada.
• Travel and stay with the MK district.  Scott and Emily Armstrong, missionaries to the Mexico and Central America region, will serve as sponsors and take care of registration for all students who would like to be a part of this district.  Their email address is:  earmstrong@nazmac.org.

How do I get there and where will I stay?

Your district leadership will decide how your district will travel to Louisville (planes, trains, busses, all of the above, etc.) and where you will stay.  You will be staying in a hotel located close to the convention center.  Your district will be in communication with you on plans and costs.

Who are the speakers and musicians?

We are unable to book speakers and music until about 12 months from the event.  Be assured they will be top notch.  Keep an eye on the website as we will update you when speakers, music, and special events are booked.

How do I register as a quizzing spectator?

Although no day passes will be available to the general public for NYC sessions, if you want to come watch your favorite teen quizzer do his or her thing, you are welcome to attend quizzing only.  There are two types of quizzing spectator passes available (both get you into all quizzing rounds for the week):
• $35—Individual
• $50—Family (Up to 2 adults and children in household)

Check back later with the www.nyc2011.com to purchase your quizzing spectator passes.

Why are we using Eastern Standard Time as our point of reference?

Louisville, Kentucky is located in Eastern Standard Time (EST) zone.  Therefore, we are making all of our deadlines EST across the board to clear up any confusion.

What is the communication strategy for NYC?

We're currently building the NYC website, www.nyc2011.com, to be the complete communication point for the event.  On the NYC website, students, adult district sponsors, event volunteers, parents and pastors will be able to find out any and all information about NYC 2011.  Through the website, everyone associated with NYC will have all the information they need about the event.
